In response to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the NEB initiated a review of the safety and environmental requirements for offshore drilling in Canada's unique Arctic environment.
Through the Arctic Offshore Drilling Review, the NEB will examine the best information available on the hazards, risks and safety measures associated with offshore drilling in the Canadian Arctic. The Board has invited those with an interest in these topics, including Northern residents, scientists, other regulators, representatives of environmental non-government organizations and industry, to share their information and knowledge.
The NEB will use the results of the review to inform its decisions on future applications for offshore drilling in the Arctic. At the end of the Arctic Offshore Drilling Review, the Board will prepare a report on safety and environmental protection requirements for offshore drilling in the Canadian Arctic.
